My GSD gets tired easy / no energy ? #222172 03/31/12 09:44 AM 03/31/12 09:44 AM | OP Member Joined: Mar 2012 Posts: 79 Utah | Over the last few days Sasha (1.5 yr old female) seems to be lazy or loses her energy very easy. Prior to that she never stopped playing or wanting to play. Now she plays for a short while and lays down. She seems to be taking longer naps. When I go outside to play catch, she plays normal but as soon as were done, she lays down and naps when before she would want to keep playing. She is eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom the same as she always has. Its hard to explain but it seems like she changed from a puppy to mature literally overnight. The only difference is the weather has gotten significantly warmer, bugs are out, plants, and green grass is starting to pop up. I did notice she ate a very small amount of green grass on our walk 2 days ago but she never threw up. I dont even know if I should take her to the vet or how to explain this. My wife said shes noticed a little more laziness but says its because the weather is much hotter and she wears out faster. Is this a possibility ? I may be over-paranoid, which I have a tendency to do. Any in-put or suggestions would be helpful. Do you have them there? Thyroid problems? And - it could be heat related or maturity. I certainly would vet if she was unusual for her and you were concerned. Fatigue is a symptom of several tick diseases. Important to check this, even if a tick panel was run just a few months ago, and even if you don't recall seeing a tick on your dog. It might bring you answers! Wishing you and your dog the very best outcome. While it sounds like your problem may be due to the weather warming up, I agree with the others that perhaps she should go to her vet and get the tests they suggest to eliminate the more obvious problems if there is one. However, I would expect a young GSD not to self-limit, but to keep pushing themselves and pant and drink more. Of course there are variations! So, the heat can bring out issues that you couldn't see when the weather was cooler. I agree with Patti on the tick panel - fatigue and general slowing can be a first sign. Heartworm and thyroid, also possible, but I think that the temps recently haven't been conducive to new HW infections? Any digestive issues going on? Hard to tell by grass eating at this time of year - the fresh grass is really tasty. Of course another rule out would be orthopedic issues. I would have the vet examine, see if there are any indications that would need xrays. If the joints seem find, I would opt for bloodwork, but I'm trying to think of which I would want at this point... I think it's important to follow your intincts in situations like this. | Re: My GSD gets tired easy / no energy ? I have payed close attention and she does not struggle to go and its consistent in frequency. I am scared to death of the Bloat and stomach twist so she gets very little water after our playing or working and I wait an hour after she has eatin before we do any activity. She just had her shots and the vet checked her joints and hips and said all is good. We just got back from a 2 mile walk/run and she dragged me the whole way. When we got home she got her ball and wanted play. I dont know, Im confused ?? But he was 5. And overnight slowed down after a set of shots the day or two prior. Still not sure if it was related to the shots or not, he ended up having cancer If this is really out of character, and especially if it persists (which sounds like she is doing fine now) But if she is still acting out of sorts, I would get bloodwork. Like Gayle said they usually just don't change overnight Fever can also cause lack of energy and you may not know they have a fever, usually they won't eat though/or eat less, but there is always exceptions hoping it is nothing!! But the "just had her shots" made my ears perk up, though she may have just been having a mild reaction to the immunizations and is better now Best to your girl and you!! -Steph GSD's Allie, gotcha 7/2007 Riko z Vom Weberhaus, "Fez" 7/29/2012 forever our angels Meeka, b. 10/31/1994-11/26/2006 Kelso, b. 9/3/2006-2/9/2012 | Re: My GSD gets tired easy / no energy ? But the "just had her shots" made my ears perk up, though she may have just been having a mild reaction to the immunizations and is better now It's a concern to me too.... The shots can trigger any infection or immune system problem that might have been previously kept in check. Watch her carefully, keep an eye on the color of the gums so that you know what they are supposed to look like. Me, if she hasn't had a full blood panel, I like to have that as baseline, so I tend to run those things once in awhile too.... Keep us posted on how she is doing....most dogs, and particularly GSDs, are good at "pushing through" and not showing what's going on. So if there is something to see, then I would listen to that. I'm guessing that she had a combo shot (5 or 7 way?) and rabies? | Re: My GSD gets tired easy / no energy ? I was positive when I started trimming trees and she was halling branches everywhere other than where I wanted them. Thanks for the info. It helped me feel less stressed about it.
